Description

The Vernon Arms Public House is a building that was originally a house, dating from the late 18th century, with later alterations and additions from the late 19th century and mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick, which is painted on the front elevation, and features a plain tiled roof with brick end stacks. The building has two storeys, an attic with a dormer, and a cellar.

Architecturally, it has a dentilled eaves cornice and is arranged in three bays. The outer bays on the ground floor have 19th-century canted flat-roofed bay windows that include moulded cornices and architraves, as well as ornate hexagonal glazing. The first floor retains 12-pane sash windows with cambered heads and moulded architraves, except for the central window, which is blocked and covered by a large openwork coat-of-arms. Above this, there is a small central gable that contains a pointed-arched window with traceried Gothick glazing. The central entrance features a 19th-century gabled porch with fluted pilasters and an entablature, leading to a 20th-century door. Additionally, there is a square light in the right side elevation and an attic light in the left gable end. This building is prominently located at a main road junction and showcases interesting architectural details.
