Description
The dovecote, located about 25 yards west of Saleway Farmhouse, dates back to around 1600 and has undergone some alterations in the mid-20th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered infill, resting on a base of lias limestone rubble, and features a plain tiled roof. The dovecote has a square plan and consists of two levels.
The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with a long straight brace in the lower corner of the east elevation and a short swept brace in the left panel of the upper row on the west elevation. The roof structure comprises collar and tie-beam trusses supported by two struts to the collar.
In the lower level, 20th-century windows have been inserted, including a 6-light window in the north elevation and a 4-light window in the east elevation. The central panel of the north roof truss features lias limestone infill with five entry holes and alighting ledges, while there is an entrance on the south elevation. Inside, a floor has been added, but nesting boxes are reported to still exist in the upper level.
