Description

Two houses, numbers 11 and 11A Green Hill, were built around 1828-1830 and have undergone later alterations. They are constructed with a brick core covered in stucco, and have a slate roof with a stuccoed chimney stack on the right side. The houses are two storeys high with a three-window, two-window, three-window arrangement on the first floor. The central section projects as a full-height rectangular bay. A plinth is visible, and there are full-height pilasters at the left end, between the second and third windows, on either side of the bay, and between the seventh and eighth windows; these are topped with a raised band and a coped parapet. Most windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills, except for the ground floor of the bay which has a tripartite window with 6/6 sashes flanked by smaller 6/6 sashes. The left-hand entrance has a six-panel door with an overlight featuring decorative glazing bars, set within a doorcase with tooled pilasters and a dentil cornice; the right-hand entrance has a four-panel door and a fanlight with radial glazing bars. The left return side has two 6/6 sashes. A single-storey range extends to the rear.

The interior retains original joinery and plasterwork, including egg and dart moulding to the cornices and ceiling friezes. The hallway on the left side contains a dogleg staircase with embellished cast-iron balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail.

Green Hill was developed around 1828 and the listed buildings within Green Hill form a notable group of early 19th-century houses. Historical research by Whitehead (1989) details the urban renewal and suburban growth that shaped Georgian Worcester.
