Description

Abbeyfield, now a nursing home, is a house dating from the 1830s and 1840s, with later additions and alterations including a 20th-century extension. It is built of stucco over brick, with a renewed tile hipped roof and brick ridge stacks. A cast-iron porch is also present. The house has two storeys and three windows on the first floor. It features a plinth, full-height pilasters to the ends and between the windows, the capitals continuing as a cornice, with a further frieze and a roll-moulded eaves cornice, topped with a coped parapet. Two roll-edged stone steps lead to the central entrance, which has a two-panel door. The porch has barleytwist pillars and a bolection-moulded hood with an acanthus frieze. Some six/six sash windows are visible to the rear. The interior has not been inspected. Green Hill was developed around 1828. Numbers 2 to 10 (consecutive), and numbers 12, 14, 15, and 16 Green Hill, London Road, form a notable group of early 19th-century houses.
