Description

Nos 16 and 17 Green Hill are a vicarage, later converted into a house, dating to approximately 1828-30, with additions and alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in a Flemish bond, with red brick window arches, a stone cornice and copings. The roof is covered with cement tiles on the right-hand side and slate on the left. The chimneys were partly renewed, featuring an oversailing course and pots.

The building has two storeys, with a four-window arrangement on the first floor and a lower, one-window range set back to the left, with a further extension also set back. The main range features 8/8 sash windows with flat arches constructed from gauged brick and sills. The left-hand range has 2/2 horned sash windows with sills. The main range has a continuous moulded cornice and a coped parapet. There is an off-centre right-hand entrance leading to a five-panel door, with the upper panels glazed and the lower panels flush-beaded, the central panels being raised and fielded. This doorway is framed by half-fluted columns and an open pediment over a fanlight with a petal motif. A further entrance is located on the left-hand side, featuring a five-panel door and a fanlight.

The interior is reported to retain original joinery and plasterwork.

The building was originally constructed as the vicarage for the Church of St Helen, now the County Record Office. Green Hill was developed around 1828. Nos 2-10 (consecutive) and Nos 12, 14, 15 and 16 Green Hill form a notable group of early 19th century houses.
