Description

This building is a barn and stable located about 10 yards east of Dunstall Court. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The structure is timber-framed with brick infill and a plinth, and it has been refaced in brick on the south side, with some brick additions. The roof is half-hipped and covered with fishscale tiles.

The barn consists of three framed bays aligned east to west, with a brick bay added at the east end. The main section features a central wagon bay with opposing cart entries and double doors. On the main south elevation, the original part has header ventilation courses, while the additional bay to the right includes a door and a shuttered loft opening, both with cambered heads.

Inside, the framing of four panels from the sill to the wall-plate is visible in the rear elevation, along with a large swept corner brace. The ends of the barn have collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The original east end truss has two collars with raking struts beneath each, plus two additional struts beneath the center of the lower collar. There are also intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts and two tiers of purlins.

The barn is a prominent feature of the former farmyard to the east of Dunstall Court and is included for its group value.
