Description
This building is a barn and attached stable, located about 20 yards south-east of Brelston Court. It likely dates from the 18th century, although it contains earlier elements and has undergone later alterations. The structure features a sandstone plinth, sandstone rubble, and a timber frame with weatherboards and brick infill, topped with a corrugated iron roof.
The barn is four bays long and is aligned west-south-west to east-north-east, with a three-bay stable wing attached to the east end of the south side. Each part has two levels. The north elevation of the barn includes two rectangular early 20th-century windows in the upper level, one on each side of full-height opposed ledged doors that lead to the threshing floor in the second bay from the left. To the right of the threshing floor, there is a six-pane window and a doorway set in brickwork. Lean-tos from the mid-19th century are present on the left and right gables.
Inside the barn, there are four pairs of cruck blades, wall-framing consisting of two square panels from the cill to the wall-plate, and a one-bay full-height extension from the 19th century on the west side. The stable features two square openings on the west elevation to the right of the entry. The south gable has two vent loops at the upper level and an entry on the left-hand side. The interior of the stable includes trusses with collars and queen-posts connecting the ties to the principals.
