Description
This building is a barn and former stable, dating from the late 17th century, with an extension from the 18th century and alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and sits on a stone plinth, featuring a coursed, squared stone gable at one end and a corrugated-iron roof. The barn consists of four bays, with lofts inserted in two of them, and a single-bay lofted stable at one end.
On the road side, the stone gable is slightly returned as a buttress, with three-panel high framing and inset boards. The last section to the right of the doors leading to the threshing floor is faced with butt-jointed boarding. There are double doors to the threshing floor, which have diagonal boarding and stop one panel short of the eaves. The roof over the left end bay has been given a flatter pitch in the 20th century. There is a centrally located boarded door to the stable on the left return, which is similar to the loft above.
Internally, there is a stone-paved threshing floor with double doors off centre. The structure has low sills on each side with long braces connecting to the main posts, and doors leading to the yard reach up to the eaves. The two bays to the right have inserted lofts, supported by queen-strut trusses, two pairs of purlins, and a square ridge. The gable is timber-framed above the stone to the eaves level only. The left bay and stable feature a tie-beam truss over the threshing floor, with a collar and angle struts. This barn forms a group with the nearby mill. A lean-to against the right gable is not of special interest.
