Description
Applehurst is a cottage built in 1847 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company, with later alterations. The building features random rubble walls that are faced with render and lined to resemble ashlar, along with a stone plinth and a slate roof. The front has three rooms, with the center projecting slightly, and it was enlarged at the rear in 1985.
A large, half-glazed timber porch with a glass roof leads to double French doors, which are one step up from the half-glazed front door. There are tall, single-casement 8-pane windows on either side of the porch, and a dumb-bell ventilator is located in the gable above, complemented by plain bargeboards. On either side of the building, there are 2-light casements with small panes. The roof is hipped, and chimneys are situated at the ends. The front was restored in 1985 to its original appearance. Applehurst forms a group with other Chartist cottages and is listed mainly for its historical and sociological significance.
