Description
Five Oaks is a cottage built in 1847 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company, with minor alterations made in the mid-20th century. The building features random rubble walls that are faced with pebble dash and has a slate roof. It has a three-room front with a slightly projecting center and is one room deep, with lean-to extensions at the rear and small lean-to wings on each side.
The cottage has a single-storey, gabled open-front porch with a boarded roof that covers a half-glazed front door, which has two flush panels below. On either side of the porch are tall, single-light eight-pane casement windows, which are likely original. The gable has a ventilator that has been rendered over, and the bargeboards are plain. The wings on each side contain two-light, mid-20th century metal casements. The roof is hipped, with a chimney located on the right end and another on the lean-to on the right. The layout of the cottage remains largely unchanged since its construction in 1847. It is part of a group of Chartist cottages and is listed mainly for its historical and sociological significance.
