Description
The Grotto is a cottage built in 1847 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company, with alterations made in the 20th century. The cottage features random rubble walls that are faced with render and lined to resemble ashlar, topped with an asbestos slate roof. It has a three-room front with a slightly projecting center and is one room deep, with a lean-to at the rear, making it a single-storey structure.
The front door is fully glazed and dates from the mid to late 20th century, flanked by tall small-paned metal windows. There is a dumb-bell ventilator in the gable, plain bargeboards, and a timber plaque at the apex. Each wing has a two-light mid-20th century metal window in its original opening. The roof is hipped, with chimneys located at the ends and in the center at the rear. The lean-to at the rear has been rebuilt. The Grotto is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance and forms a group with other Chartist bungalows.
