Description

This is a barn located about 60 yards southeast of Chapel House Farm. It dates from the early 17th century and has been altered in the mid-19th century. The barn is constructed of handmade red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings, quoins, and a plinth. It features a plain and machine-tiled roof with parapets at the gable ends, although these have been partly replaced. The barn has a rectangular three-bay plan that is aligned roughly north to south and consists of two levels.

On the main west elevation, the left and central bays contain two splayed-mullioned 2-light windows, which flank a semi-circular headed archway that has a keyblock and a continuous hood mould with returns above the door and windows. The right bay features a square-headed archway with a moulded sandstone head and jambs. There are attic lights in the gable ends.

Inside, the roof includes two intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars and struts, along with subsidiary scissor braces and two tiers of purlins. Locally, the building is referred to as "the Roman Chapel," but there is no evidence to support claims of medieval or earlier origins or any former ecclesiastical use. The barn is situated on a moated site and is likely a surviving outbuilding or wing of a large Jacobean house that has since been demolished. Chapel House Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
