Description

Coldenhale Farmhouse, along with its adjoining stable and hop kilns, is a 17th-century building that has undergone alterations and additions in the mid-19th century. The farmhouse features a timber-framed structure with painted brick infill, replacement walling, and plain tiled roofs. It has a hall and cross-wing plan, with the hall consisting of two framed bays oriented east to west; the lower bay is used as a stable and has a central chimney with a brick stack at the rear of the ridge. The cross-wing, located at the west end, also has two framed bays and features a 19th-century external chimney with a large stack.

The building is single storey with an attic that includes dormers. The hall section displays wall-posts and an upper row of panels, while the cross-wing has two rows of panels at the first floor level, a short straight upper right corner brace, and a collar and tie-beam truss with a central strut, along with outer raking struts beneath the collar and a V-strut in the apex.

On the north front elevation, the hall part has a three-light ground floor casement and two gabled dormers; the left dormer has a square opening for a hayloft, while the other features a three-light casement. There is a stable door in the left bay, and the cross-wing gable end includes three-light casements on both the ground and first floors, with the ground floor window having a cambered head. The main entrance, located to the left of the ground floor window, features a gabled canopy and a 19th-century door.

Although the interior was not inspected, a 19th-century brick stable bay is attached to the east gable end, which includes a two-light upper level window and a stable door with a cambered head. To the east of the stable bay, there are two square brick hop kilns topped with pyramidal slate roofs, the rear kiln featuring a cowl. Additionally, a 19th-century lean-to addition encloses the external chimney on the west elevation of the cross-wing.
