Description
Hayes Farmhouse and the adjoining outbuilding date from the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed from finely jointed brick and features a plain tiled roof with end stacks. It stands three storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The building has three bays, with ground and first floor windows that have cambered heads. The outer bays contain 3-light casements, while the central bay features a blind first floor window and a rectangular window on the second floor. The central entrance has a cambered head and a ledged and battened door.
The adjoining outbuilding is located to the rear right of the farmhouse. It is built partly of rubble and timber framing with painted brick infill and replacement walling, and partly of brick with a plain tiled roof and a brick ridge stack. This single-storey structure has roughly six bays, a central chimney, and a circular bread oven on the north side. The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with some long straight lower corner braces, and no trusses are visible. A lean-to with a catslide roof runs along most of the north side, which includes five goose pens. At the east end, there is a granary and a hop kiln; the granary has two bays and two levels, with external steps leading to a loft door on the north side, while the hop kiln features a gabled roof.
