Description

The former hop kilns and malt house, located about 36 metres south-east of Court Farmhouse, likely dates from around 1832. It is constructed of brick and features plain tiled roofs with two spans. The building has a large rectangular plan oriented north to south and consists of two levels, an attic, and a cellar. All openings in the structure have cambered heads.

The west range includes a two-light and a three-light window at the first floor level, along with six ventilation slits on its west side. There are attic lights in the gable ends. The east range features six large doors on its east side and has six complete cowls along its roof ridge.

Inside, the east range contains six kilns with drying floors, while the west range has a long germinating floor with access to each kiln. There is a staircase and ancillary rooms at the north end, as well as large vaulted cellars.

At the north end of the west elevation, there is a three-bay 18th-century wing with two levels and a dentilled eaves cornice. The north elevation has two altered ground floor windows with cambered heads, two wood-mullioned windows on the upper level, and a central loft door above a square archway for cart access.

The hop kilns and malt house are likely contemporary with the nearby barn and stables, which are also dated to 1832. This building forms a group with Court Farmhouse, the barn and stables, and the granary, and is prominently situated on a ridge south of the Church of St Andrew.
