Description
Lowerhouse Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that has been divided into two dwellings and is now a house. It was remodelled around 1840 and restored in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a shallow-pitched hipped slate roof. It has a T-plan layout, with the main part consisting of three bays aligned east to west, featuring a central chimney bay and a brick ridge stack. There is a cross-wing at the east end with two bays and a large external chimney on the east side elevation. The farmhouse has three storeys and a cellar, with a two-course band between the ground and first floors and a dentilled eaves cornice.
On the south front elevation, the windows have rusticated lintels with projecting keyblocks and stone sills. The ground and first floor windows are cross-casements, while the second floor windows are 2-light casements. There are two windows on each storey of the main part and one window on each storey of the projecting wing to the right. At the angle between the wing and the main part, there is a full-height porch addition with a round-headed archway and a panelled door. A blocked doorway is located at the centre of the main part.
Inside, the main storeys feature ogee-stop chamfered main ceiling beams, and there are back-to-back fireplaces in the main parts. An open well staircase is located at the rear right of the main part, complete with a moulded handrail and turned balusters. The cellar is vaulted. There is also a two-storey 19th-century addition adjoining both the west and east side elevations. It is likely that the house was originally designed with a lobby-entry plan. The house was undergoing restoration at the time of the survey in April 1985.
