Description
Primrose Cottages is a former row of cottages, possibly dating back to the 15th century as a cruck hall house. It was later refaced, with a 19th-century addition and 20th-century alterations. The cottages are timber-framed with brick infill, brick refacing, and corrugated asbestos roofs to numbers 1 and 2, and tiled to number 3.
The cottages are arranged in a range aligned east/west. The original three-bay cruck house is located to the east, with an addition to the west. Each cottage has an axial stack, with the stack to number 1 formerly external at the gable, now enclosed by 20th-century alterations. The cottages are single-storey with an attic, featuring irregular window placement and three gabled dormers with two-light casements. The ground floor has two- and three-light casements. Doorways are present at numbers 2 and on the right-hand side of each dormer, with a partly-glazed door at number 1, a 20th-century ledged door with a plain open porch at number 2, and a doorway to number 3 through a partly-glazed lean-to.
The timber framing has been altered, with three panels visible from sill to wall-plate. Inside number 1, one intact full cruck truss remains, and there are traces of smoke blackening on the upper timbers, while the former end truss has been cut below tie-beam level. Group value derives from the building's historical and architectural significance.
