Description

The Mount Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel, built around 1870 and enlarged in 1891 and 1908 by Edward Ould. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof with brick stacks. The building is designed in an Arts and Crafts style and has an L-plan layout. It stands two storeys high with an attic and presents a garden front that includes five gabled bays and a full-height, four-bay ballroom to the left. The gables are coped, and the fenestration is varied, primarily consisting of sashed or mullioned windows. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay next to a 20th-century bowed extension.

The ballroom is notable for its quoins and parapet, tall four-light transomed windows with enriched friezes, a gabled bay window to the left, and a canted bay window at the right end. The building also features enriched rainwater heads and downspouts. The rear of the hotel is similar in style, with 20th-century single-storey extensions. A square tower at the angle includes a stair window and a large ashlar oriel, with a gabled porch to the left.

Inside, the hotel boasts rich decoration, including a hall with elaborate plasterwork, an inglenook fireplace, a gallery, and a lantern. The ballroom features a moulded plaster ceiling, a gallery on two sides, panelling, and an end fireplace with enriched panelling and a gallery above.
