Description
Wightwick Lock and Bridge No 57 is a lock with an accompanying bridge located on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal in Wolverhampton, built around 1770 by engineers Brindley, Simcock, and Dadford. The structure is made of brick with stone dressings. The bridge features a segmental arch with ashlar jambs, a hood, and coping. An oval plate on the bridge is inscribed with the words "WIGHTWICK/NO 57/BRIDGE." The lock itself has a single upper gate and double lower gates, with an overflow to the south. This lock is notable as one of James Brindley's first locks.
