Description
The gates, gate piers, and flanking walls at the entrance to Villiers Limited date back to 1765 and were designed by 'Capability' Brown. They were moved from their original location in Tong, Shropshire, in 1977. The structure extends approximately 17.5 meters and is made of squared and coursed sandstone.
The gates are crafted from latticed wrought iron and feature triangular heads with fleurs-de-lys. The gate piers have shallow trefoil-headed niches and are topped with pinnacles adorned with vine crockets and pineapple finials. The left pier is inscribed with "POSTERITATI/SACRUM/IMPENSIS/GEO.DURANT AR/1821," indicating it was dedicated to the descendants of George Durant at his expense in 1821. Each pier is encircled by a loosely knotted carved rope, which continues around the embattled parapets of the flanking curved walls.
The end piers resemble the others, although the ball finials were missing at the time of the last survey in 1990. The piers also feature relief symbols, including a cross, cornucopia, hive, flower, and shells. The walls have nowy-headed niches with gadrooned bases, Tuscan columns, and segmental-headed hoods.
