Description

Claremont House is a house built around 1845 for Joseph Foster, a solicitor, and extended around 1905 for J W Sankey, an industrialist. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features hipped Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, with a symmetrical three-window arrangement on the classical-style garden front. Notable architectural details include a moulded string course, a first-floor sill band, and a deep band beneath the projecting eaves. The doorway and window above are set in tripartite architraves with pilasters, paterae, and cornices, while similar architraves frame the outer tripartite windows. The side and rear elevations are plainer, with a bold Edwardian doorcase on the extension. Inside, the house features panelled doors and marble chimneypieces, including one in the ground-floor reception room with decorative tile surrounds depicting landscapes. The ground floor of the south extension, built around 1905, includes a fine Jacobean-style panelled room with a classical-style chimneypiece adorned with De Morgan tile surrounds.
