Description

The former north gates and gatepiers to Tong Castle, along with flanking retaining walls and bollards, are located approximately 30 metres southwest of The Old Post Office. These structures date from the late 18th century or early 19th century.

The gates are made of wrought iron and feature fleur-de-lys railings. The flanking walls are constructed from squared and coursed sandstone, measuring about 5 metres long and 1 metre high. They have dentil brick chamfered coping and central segmental arched niches, which are flanked by recessed Latin and Maltese crosses. The square gate and end piers also have dentil brick coping.

There are low flanking retaining walls, approximately 20 metres to the left and 60 metres to the right of the gates. Behind the retaining wall, there are bollards, with four to the left of the gates and eleven to the right, connected by chain links. These cannon-type bollards feature acanthus necking, finials, and Durant shields with the motto: "Heati qui Durant," which translates to "Blessed are those who endure" or "Blessed are the Durants."

The bollards were relocated from near the castle when it was no longer inhabited. The walls share similar details with those east of Convent Lodge, which are dated 1821. However, if the walls date back to the construction of the castle in 1765, they were likely designed by the architect 'Capability' Brown.
