Description

The Red House is a house dated 1766, located on Newport Road in Tong. It is constructed of red brick with an old tile roof and has an L-plan layout. The building stands three storeys tall, with a two-storey wing at the rear. Architectural features include a moulded stone plinth, a giant order of end pilaster strips, a moulded wooden eaves cornice, a stone-coped parapet gable end, and end stacks along with a stack at the rear.

The façade has three bays with windows that feature 19th-century wooden mullioned and transomed casements, bracketed cills, gauged heads, and projecting keystones. The central entrance consists of a six-panelled door, with the top four panels glazed. It is framed by a doorcase that includes a moulded architrave, frieze, and cornice, along with a 19th-century wrought iron lattice porch topped with a tented hood.

To the right, there is a two-storey outbuilding made of red brick with a tile roof, which is set back from the main house. This outbuilding features a plinth, an eaves band, a dentilled brick eaves cornice, and a parapeted gable end. It has two 20th-century casements with segmental relieving arches flanking a central blocked segmental arched doorway. The bricks at the front of the outbuilding are inscribed with "RP/AP/MP."

Inside, the house features an 18th-century two-flight dog-leg staircase with an open string, turned balusters, and an inlaid moulded ramped handrail.
