Description
The remains of Tong Castle date from the 12th century to the 16th century and consist of fragmentary sandstone walls situated on natural rock. The site is now divided into two parts and is largely hidden by the M54 Motorway. Most of the original castle, built around 1500 by Sir Harry Vernon, was demolished in 1764 by George Durant the elder, who replaced it with a Gothick Castle designed by 'Capability' Brown in 1765. This later structure was demolished in 1954. The site was under excavation at the time of the re-survey by the Shropshire Archaeological Society, with a report expected to follow.
