Description
The remains of Tong Castle date from the 14th century to around 1765. The structure is made of sandstone and red brick, set on natural rock. The site includes fragmentary remains of stables and outbuildings, featuring barrel vaulted cellars and part of a newel staircase. Currently, the site is divided into two parts and is largely obscured by the M54 Motorway. In 1764, George Durant the elder demolished most of Sir Harry Vernon's circa 1500 castle and replaced it with 'Capability' Brown's Gothick Castle in 1765, which was later demolished in 1954. The Shropshire Archaeological Society has recently excavated the site, with a report forthcoming.
