Description
Shoemakers Cottage and Old Tong House are two former cottages located on the north side of Hubbal Lane in Tong. They date from the mid to late 17th century and are constructed with a timber frame, featuring a stone plinth, painted brick nogging, and an old tile roof. The building consists of four framed bays and stands one and a half storeys tall.
The exterior includes four eyebrow eaves dormers, each fitted with two-light leaded casements, along with end stacks and central ridge stacks. The framing is characterized by square panels with straight braces. The front of the building has four windows: a two-light leaded casement on the left and three five-light leaded casements on the right, with the far-right window displaying Gothic tracery. There are boarded and half-glazed doors located between the first and second windows from the left, and a 20th-century boarded door between the first and second windows from the right. It is likely that this row of cottages was originally thatched.
