Description

Nos 85, 87, and 89 Colmore Row is a building dating from around 1870, designed by H R Yeoville Thomason, and was formerly the Union Club. It is constructed of stone and consists of two storeys plus a basement, featuring seven bays, with the outer two bays being advanced and asymmetrical. The left-hand return on Newhall Street has a curved design.

On the ground floor, there is a single window set in a rusticated wall, a modern shop front, and an open porch with a tiled soffit supported by coupled unfluted Corinthian columns, which is accessed by modern flights of steps. Following this, there is another modern shop front and a prominent canted bay window that displays heavy rustication and masks as keystones for the windows.

The first floor features three windows with heavy pediments on brackets, a tripartite window above the porch with a central segmental pediment, two additional windows with pediments, and another tripartite window that is slightly wider than the first. All windows have arched lights, balconies, keystones, and richly carved spandrels. The building is adorned with a rich foliage frieze, a bracketed eaves cornice, and a blocking course topped with urns. The return section has four bays and presents a simpler rhythm in its design.
