Description

Nos 16 and 17 Newhall Hill are two-storey buildings dating from around 1860 to 1870, possibly designed by H R Yeoville Thomason. They are constructed of blue brick with grey and red dressings, some of which have been painted over, along with some stone elements. The buildings feature a symmetrical design with a ground floor that has an arcade of blue brick piers resting on stone bases. This arcade includes three broad stilted segmental arches alternating with four narrow round arches, with windows and doors inserted in an asymmetrical manner. The cornices of the capitals create a quasi-string course that aligns with the transoms and doorframes.

Above, a deep entablature with a modillion cornice serves as a sill for the eight first-floor windows. These consist of four narrow round-arched windows in the center, flanked by two broad four-centred arches and two more narrow round arches on either side. Medallions are present in the spandrels. A moulded stone stringcourse separates the frieze from the main modillion cornice. The decorative parapet features a blind balustrade pattern made of grey brick uprights with red brick infill panels.
