Description

Nos. 3, 4, and 5 Legge Lane is a Grade II listed building dating from 1895, designed by the architects Essex Nicol and Goodman, known for their use of terracotta decoration in late 19th century Birmingham. This three-storey structure, originally a pen and pen-holder works, features an elevation with seven closely set window bays. The building is primarily faced with terracotta, while the lower part of the ground floor is constructed of red brick, and there are rendered brick bands between the storeys and in the parapet, which rises to a tall shaped gable.

The design is a cohesive composition, with terracotta used to highlight the structural grid of the elevation. The ground and first floor windows are set within segment-headed terracotta arcades, complete with moulded reveals and sloping sills. Asymmetrical doorways are located on the ground floor; the entrance to the works on the left features a broader elliptical arch with a stepped cornice above, while the right-hand office doorway is narrower, with a semi-circular arch and sharply modelled terracotta brackets supporting a steeply swept and curved pediment that projects from the cornice moulding.

The second floor windows echo the details of the lower floors but are set within round-headed arcading, adorned with rosettes in the spandrels. A rich terracotta frieze depicting vegetable forms is flanked by capped console brackets and a modillion cornice. Ball finials are positioned over the parapet kneelers and on the piers that flank the shaped gable.
