Description
51 Albion Street is a late 19th-century manufactory that may have been remodeled from an earlier dwelling, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings and features a stuccoed parapet with a pediment. It has a Welsh slate roof with a single gable stack.
The structure has an L-shaped plan, consisting of an office range at the front and a monopitch workshop range at the rear. The exterior presents a near-symmetrical, three-bay elevation over two storeys, starting from a shallow blue brick plinth. The left side has a doorway, the centre features a wide three-light window, and the right side has a narrower window. All openings have shallow segmental-arched heads with painted imposts, springers, and advanced keystones. The doorway includes a four-panel door with a blind overlight, while the window openings have late 20th-century frames. The upper floor windows mirror the lower ones but have bracketed sills. The building is topped with a dentilled and bracketed eaves cornice and a shallow pedimented parapet. The rear monopitch workshop range has chimneys for the workshop hearths located in the west wall.
This manufactory is part of a group with No. 50 Albion Street and No. 52 Albion Street, contributing to a prominent street frontage of industrial premises in a specialist manufacturing district of Birmingham, which is now recognized as being of international significance.
