Description

Nos 14 and 15 on Frederick Street, built around 1860-1870, are located in the Hockley area of Birmingham's jewellery quarter. This building features a tall, two-storey stuccoed façade with Italianate decorative details, which likely originally included residential accommodation. The front has four bays with a moulded capped plinth, a moulded sill course at the first floor, a stepped frieze, and dentils at the prominent eaves cornice. The outer bays contain doorways, while the centre has windows on the ground floor. Each window consists of two round-headed lights with slender shafts, above which are blind panels featuring roundel and wreath ornament, and bearded head keystones above the lintels. The panelled aprons extend down to the plinth. The doorways are flanked by pilaster strips with large console brackets that support dentil cornices, and they feature the same keystones as the windows. The first-floor windows have similar details, including cambered arches and a linking string at the impost level. The right-hand windows have been combined into one larger opening. The bearded head keystones extend into the frieze and are flanked by decorated consoles that rise to the eaves cornice, creating a lively elevation that marks the workshop's rear ranges.
