Description

49 Albion Street is a Grade II listed building located in Hockley, Birmingham, dating from the 1860s. It is a modest two-storey corner block that serves as offices and showrooms, with workshops included, and features a two-storey shopping range on Albion Street. The building is constructed of light red brick with simple stucco dressings.

The façade facing Frederick Street has three bays, while the return to Albion Street has two bays. It has a shallow plinth and a stepped band beneath the shallow boxed eaves of a low-pitched half-hipped slate roof. A red brick chimney with a stucco cornice is located above the front on Albion Street.

Both floors feature round-headed windows with stucco imposts and trim around the arches. There is also a round-headed doorway with a keystone. The shopping range has stepped brick eaves leading to a low-pitched slate roof. The ground floor has round-headed windows with linked imposts and stucco trim, while the first floor has a cill band with segmental arched close-set windows. A stringcourse at the impost level is carried up over the arches. All windows in this range retain iron fixed glazing. This building is part of an early jewelry quarter and occupies a prominent corner site.
