Description
22 Frederick Street is a bank that was originally built as a manufactory in 1901, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building features a decorative terracotta facade and a slated hipped roof. It has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a deep double pile frontage range and a storeyed workshop range at the rear, located on the north side of a narrow yard.
The exterior showcases an elaborately detailed three-storey frontage with four bays. The windows are arranged in a pattern of 1:3:3:1 on the first and second floors. The ground floor has doorways in the outer bays, each featuring a wide nine-panel door topped by a rectangular fanlight. There are two late 20th-century six-pane shop windows within a rendered surround below a wide storey band. Fluted tapered pilasters flank and separate the tripartite sash windows on the first floor and the shallow glazing bar casements on the second floor. A moulded string course runs between the pilasters, and there is a deep dentilled cornice below the parapet, which is topped with twin Dutch gables that have decorative date plaques and finials. The rear elevation includes an attached former workshop range of two storeys and six bays, reflecting its history as a manufactory.
Inside, the ground floor of the frontage range has been remodeled to create a banking hall, which still retains some early 19th-century fittings. Historically, the site was shown on the 1889 Ordnance Survey as a jewellery works, depicted as an U-shaped complex with a narrow rear yard surrounded by workshops to the north and east. The entrance to the yard is still visible on the right-hand side of the street elevation, where a doorway remains. The position of the northern workshop range aligns with the current building.
This property forms a group with No. 23 Frederick Street and is part of a significant collection of manufactories in an industrial district that is now recognized for its international importance.
