Description

Nos 61 and 67 on Colmore Row, built around 1870 and partly designed by H R Yeoville Thomason, is a large stone building featuring three distinct sections. The central part is three stories high, plus a basement and attic, and consists of six bays, with the middle four bays set forward and marked by giant Corinthian pilasters on the first and second floors. The ground floor has banded rustication and four windows, with entrances on either side set in shallow porches that support balconies above. The first floor has six windows, plain in the outer bays but with moulded heads in the inner bays. The second floor windows are similar, but the outer bays are within shallow eared recesses that also encompass the first-floor windows. Above, there are six small oval attic windows in the frieze, and a boldly bracketted cornice above the central four bays, topped by an attic pediment.

Flanking this central section are two similar wings, each four stories high, plus a basement and five bays wide. The ground floors of these wings also feature banded rustication and arched windows. The first floor has a central window with a segmental pediment, the second floor has segment-headed windows, and the third floor has windows with eared moulded surrounds and a bracketted eaves cornice. Behind the central section is an impressive banking hall, nine bays long and five bays wide, with tall arched bays supported by Corinthianesque pilasters and four Corinthianesque columns on corbels. The hall features an entablature and a coved ceiling with coffers and a central shallow dome.
