Description
Nos 5 and 6 on Birmingham Road are a timber-framed cruck cottage dating from around 1500, with a two-storey extension added to the west in the 17th century. The building features one complete cruck and one truncated cruck at the south-east gable, and it is partly set on a sandstone plinth. The infill panels are made of red brick, and the south-east gable was faced in red brick during the 19th century. The cottage has a steeply pitched thatched roof with gabled ends; the northwest end has a slightly higher roof level, while the centre has lower eaves. It is two storeys tall, with a single-storey section in the middle and a four-window range. The windows are mostly old two- and three-light casements with glazing bars. There is a plank door to the left of the front elevation leading to No 6, and a modern door on the south-east gable for No 5. Two brick ridge chimney stacks are positioned off centre. Inside, the central room features an axial beam with scroll stops and two half beams supported by brackets pinned to the cruck studs. The fireplace beam in the central room and the ceiling beam in the 17th-century addition also have scroll stops.
