Description

A pair of cottages, possibly originally a single house, dating from the 17th century with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed of coursed squared ironstone. No.3 has a corrugated iron roof and a brick internal stack, while No.2 has a brick end stack, and the roof of No.2 was undergoing reconstruction at the time of survey. The building has a four-unit plan, and is two storeys high with a four-window front.

No.2 features a plank door with a wood lintel in the second bay, set into a partially bricked-up chamfered mullioned window. One light of the original window remains, with a hood mould. There is a three-light 19th-century window with a wood lintel. The first-floor windows were removed during the resurvey, but traces of stone mullions remain in the right-hand window. The interior includes broad, stepped stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and an open fireplace.

No.3 has three-light casements with a horizontal glazing bar inserted into the low, original three-light chamfered mullioned windows, where the mullions have been removed; the ground-floor window retains remains of a hood-mould. To the right is a three-light 19th-century casement with horizontal glazing bars and a painted wood lintel, and a small, part-leaded two-light casement is above. A 19th-century leaded half-glazed four-panelled door with painted glass gives access to the rear. The interior has not been inspected.

The cottages are included in the listing for their group value.
