Description

The Cedars is a house with origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier, which underwent extensive remodeling in the early 19th century. It is constructed from regularly coursed ironstone and features a slate double-span roof with coped gable parapets and moulded kneelers. The roof is topped with large stone central ridge stacks that have cornices and brick shafts. The building has a double-depth central staircase plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic, presenting a three-window range.

The entrance front, facing Hellidon Road, includes a parapet between the gables. A central flush six-panelled door with a fanlight above is set within a painted wood porch supported by Tuscan columns and half-columns, featuring a half-domed hood with shell moulding. The windows are sashes with thick frames, and painted stone lintels with large keystones adorn the openings.

On the garden front, which faces the Village Green, there are two large two-storey canted bay windows that are white-washed and topped with slate hipped roofs. The left return side of the house retains the remains of a stone mullioned window with a hood mould, along with casement windows.

Inside, the drawing room is finished with panelling and a Neoclassical pine fireplace. The open well stairs feature a scrolled string, and the attics contain several old three-plank doors with strap hinges.
