Description
No. 21 Sheep Street is a police station, now serving as a social aid centre, built in 1874. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring a plinth, stone storey bands, and a stone-coped parapet. It has a tiled roof with a stone-coped gable and brick end stacks. The structure is two storeys high and has an L-shaped plan with a three-window range.
The central entrance consists of a plank door with an overlight above it. To the immediate left of the door is a two-light stone mullioned and transomed window, while there are three-light stone mullioned and transomed windows to both the left and right. All windows and doors are framed with quoined surrounds, hood moulds with label stops, and brick relieving arches. On the first floor, there is a range of three three-light mullioned and transomed windows, also with quoined surrounds. At the centre of the building, a stone-coped gable rises to ridge level, topped with a ball finial and a moulded tablet inscribed in bas-relief with 'VR/POLICE/STATI0Nl1874'. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
