Description
No. 24 Payton Street is a town house built in the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed of brick featuring buff headers and ashlar dressings, topped with a double-span slate roof and brick end stacks. The gable faces the front to the right. The building stands two storeys high and has a three-window range, with a small two-storey addition to the right that includes a single-storey conservatory.
The house features a top modillioned brick cornice and a round-headed entrance. The doorcase has a bracketed open pediment, and above the panelled door is a fanlight with radial glazing bars. On either side of the entrance are two-storey bay windows with sills and top cornices, fitted with 4:16:4-pane horned sashes. The central first-floor window has a wedge lintel above a casement. The addition to the right has a 12-pane sash window on the first floor.
The conservatory has a tripartite front with half columns, a top frieze and cornice, a hipped roof, and small-paned glazing. The left return of the building features a two-storey service wing. At the rear, there is a parapet with a cross-axial stack. The return to the street has a segmental-headed entrance with a 20th-century door to the left of an altered wide opening that contains a 20th-century casement window. The first floor has a window with a brick sill and a timber lintel above a 4/8-pane sash window.
