Description
The Payton Hotel is a pair of town houses, one of which is now a hotel, dating from around 1820. The building is constructed of painted brick with stucco dressings and features a hipped slate roof with brick ridge ends and cross-axial stacks. It is designed in the Georgian style and has three storeys with a four-window range. The plain eaves soffit adds to its simplicity.
The central entrances are flanked by pilasters and have margin lights above the overlights. The entrance to No. 5 features a frieze and a consoled cornice above a 20th-century six-fielded-panel door, while No. 6 has moulded pilasters and a consoled pediment over a 20th-century half-glazed door. The windows are detailed with sills and rusticated wedge lintels that include keys. The ground floor has four-pane sashes, the first floor has twelve-pane sashes, and the second floor has six-pane sashes.
To the right, there is a single-window return facing Payton Street, which includes a lower wing. The rear of the building has two gabled wings and a lean-to outshut. This hotel is part of the early 19th-century development of the northern part of Stratford, known as New Town.
