Description
Baptist church built in 1835-1836, constructed of painted brick with a stucco front and a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and is designed in a simple Greek Revival style. The front features channelled rustication and a tetrastyle Doric portico with unfluted columns arranged in pairs, along with triglyphs and guttae on the entablature, and the date inscribed on the pediment. The entrance includes a doorcase with panelled pilaster strips, rosettes, and an altered pediment, leading to paired half-glazed doors. The four-window returns have modillioned brick cornices and tall plain battered windows with sills, topped with rubbed brick flat arches over small-paned glazing, two of which have leaded glazing on the left return. The right return features an end round-headed window above the entrance. The interior includes an aedicule at the end, a cornice, and ceiling roses. Baptist meetings began in 1826, and a church was established in 1832. This building is part of the early 19th-century development of northern Stratford, known as New Town.
