Description
19 and 20 Payton Street are a pair of townhouses built in the early to mid 19th century. They are constructed of brick with buff headers and feature a slate roof with a brick cross-axial stack. The houses have a double-depth plan and are designed in the Georgian style, standing three storeys tall with a two-window range.
A modillioned brick cornice adorns the top of the buildings. The entrance to No. 20 is located on the right side in a lean-to outshut, featuring a doorcase with moulded pilasters and a bracketed open pediment, along with a narrow overlight above a four-fielded-over-two-flush-panel door. There is also an entry in the wall to the right. The windows are fitted with sills and have painted rubbed brick cambered arches over 12-pane sashes, while the second floor has 6-pane sashes.
To the left end, there is an area wall with a round-headed entry. The left return includes a hipped porch with a front entrance to No. 19, similar to No. 20, but with a fretwork fascia above the canopy. At the back, there is a two-storey rear range. This pair of houses is part of the early 19th-century development of northern Stratford, known as New Town.
