Description

Shepherd's Yard is a former rectory, now a private house, built around 1788. The building is constructed of red brick and features a painted stone or plaster modillion cornice and dressings. It has a two-span slate roof with brick end stacks that are part of shaped gables. The house has a central staircase plan and stands three storeys tall with a three-window range. The entrance includes a half-glazed door and fanlight with decorative glazing and a panelled intrados. The wood doorcase is adorned with Tuscan half columns set against rusticated pilasters, dosserets with triglyphs, and a broken pediment. The sash windows are positioned under flat arches, featuring rusticated voussoirs and key blocks. The garden front has a five-window range, with a mid-19th century canted bay window to the right on the ground floor.

Inside, there is an open well staircase that is semi-circular at the rear with a cut string, and a late 18th century cornice. A through passage leads to various rooms, which include late 18th and early 19th century fireplaces, as well as late 18th century six-panelled doors and shutters. In 1788, the rector borrowed £600 to rebuild the house. There is also a contemporary service or stable wing attached to the right, which has been converted into a dwelling.
