Description

The Old School House and former School, dated 1840, is a National School now used by the Girl Guides. It is built of painted brick and features slate roofs with brick modillion eaves, hipped roofs, and pedimental gables. The building has brick axial and lateral stacks. The layout includes a central schoolroom, a smaller schoolroom in the east crosswing, and the master's house in the west crosswing, with later outshuts at the rear.

The exterior is a single-storey structure with the central three bays featuring three 3-light windows with round-headed lights and multi-pane cast-iron casements. There is a segmentally arched doorway on the left with a glazed plank door. The right crosswing is slightly advanced and has a pedimental gable, stringcourses, and a 3-light window with segmentally headed lights and similar multi-pane metal casements. The master's house, located in the 2-storey crosswing on the left, has a stringcourse at the first floor level and segmentally arched windows with hoodmoulds, featuring 2-light casements with small panes. The west return has similar windows and a panel at the center of the first floor displaying a small armorial device and the inscription "NATIONAL SCHOOL Built AD 1840." There is also a segmentally arched casement in the outshut on the left. The interior of the schoolrooms is ceiled, but braced collar-trusses are partly exposed. The interior of the master's house was not inspected.
