Description

The Old Cottage, also known as Ye Olde Cottage, is a pair of cottages located on Church Walk in Great Alne. They date from the 17th century, with some refacing from the 18th century and a wing added in the 18th or 19th century. The cottages feature timber framing with lath and plaster, while the cross wing is largely faced with whitewashed brick and has a brick dentil cornice. The roof is thatched, although the cross wing on the left has a mostly tiled roof. The building is in an L-plan layout, with the cross wing on the left side.

It stands two storeys high and has a four-window range. The main range displays exposed framing, which is partly underbuilt on the right side. There is a 19th-century plank door with a tiled hood. The windows include 18th, 19th, and 20th-century casements, one of which has an old leaded light. The cross wing, known as Ye Olde Cottage, features a wide external stick with a fire window. The left return side facing Church Walk has a two-window range, with casements that have glazing bars; the ground floor windows are three-light under segmental arches. There are also two hipped dormers. The entrance to the one-storey and attic wing at the rear has a ribbed door and an open porch. The rear of the building shows exposed framing. Inside, the Old Cottage has exposed framing as well, and it has a late 20th-century two-storey, two-window addition on the right side.
