Description

This obelisk, located approximately 45 metres south-east of Compton Verney, was erected in 1848 and incorporates earlier work. It is made of Cornish granite set on ashlar slabs. The structure features two ashlar slabs that cap the entrance to a vault, and a granite plinth that stands on four steps leading up to the obelisk. An inscription on the obelisk states that it is a replica of one at the Lateran in Rome. The inscription also commemorates its purpose: to mark the site of the vault and graves of the Verney family, which are located on the site of the old church that was demolished in 1772 during 'Capability' Brown's landscaping of the park.
