Description

This is a stable block, dating from the early to mid-18th century with later 20th-century alterations. It was designed by James Gibbs and forms an important group with the main house. Constructed from limestone ashlar and dressed stone, it has a hipped roof covered with graduated stone slates. The building is arranged around a courtyard.

The south range is symmetrical, featuring nine windows with a three-window section projecting forward under a pediment bearing the Verney crest in a roundel. The ground floor has three doorcases with Gibbs surrounds, large key blocks with flanking voussoirs and pediments; late 20th-century raised sills have been added to French windows. The ground floor windows have sills, Gibbs surrounds, and six-pane sashes. First-floor windows are architraves carried round all four sides, with three-pane sashes, some of which retain crown glass. A clock turret sits above, with square base, clock faces, a bell-stage featuring recessed canted angles and round arches, a cornice, and a cupola topped with a weather vane.

The right return front features a similar five-window range. The ends project forward and a central elliptical archway has a rusticated arch and a lantern bracket; one side of the passage has 20th-century round windows. The left return is similar but includes an ashlar infill to an archway and an elliptical-headed entrance within a hollow-chamfered arch. The rear of the building is of plain dressed stone with windows containing plain lintels over six-pane sashes on the ground floor, and seven 20th-century gabled dormers on the first floor.

The courtyard's ground level has been raised. The south side has three rebated round-headed arches with 20th-century infill, flanking entrances with glazed side lights to six-fielded-panel doors. The first floor on the north side has three windows, flanked by partly blocked pitching doors, all with six-pane sashes. The west side incorporates an elliptical arch with a later infill. The east side is similarly designed.

The interior was altered in the late 20th century with the addition of new fittings and staircases and has not been inspected.
