Description
The service building and attached gate pier located to the west of the stable block at Compton Verney, also known as The Butler's House, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar with coursed dressed stone and brick at the rear, topped with hipped slate roofs and stone and brick stacks. The building features a three-unit plan with a wing attached to the northeast angle.
The exterior is two stories high, with a two-window range on the left, a single-storey recessed centre with a deep pentice, and a single-storey range with two windows on the right. A top cornice runs along the building. The left range has flat arches over blocked windows, which have been replaced by two-light single-chamfered mullioned windows with concrete dressings and label moulds, along with one three-light window on the ground floor to the right. The centre section includes a cast-iron column supporting the pentice, with an entrance to the right of a narrow window featuring a 2/4 sash. There is a re-entrant insertion to the right and another entrance leading to the right range. The right range has two windows with sills and flat arches over 12-pane sashes.
The left return of the building has two two-light windows on each floor, while the right return features three high-set windows with 9-pane sashes. The rear is made of dressed stone and includes a similar window to the front, along with two flat-roofed half-dormers with sashes in the centre and a single-storey hipped wing at the right end. The block at the angle has an entrance at the front and two windows on the right return with sills and flat arches over cross-casements. The gate pier is attached to the end, and the rear and left return walls are made of brick. The interior has not been inspected.
