Description
This milestone, located approximately 17 meters west of The Lodge on Stratford Lane in Newbold-on-Stour, dates from the mid-19th century. It is made of ashlar and consists of two stages, with the upper stage featuring a pyramidal top. The milestone is inscribed with the following text: "6 miles/To Shakespeare's Town whose Name/Is known throughout the Earth/To Shipston 4 whose lesser Name/Boasts no such Poet's Birth" and "Crux men lux/After darkness LIGHT/From light home flows/and Peace in death/In Christ a sure repose 1871". It has coats of arms carved on either side, and the panels are cusped. This milestone is included for its group value.
