Description
Riven dell and attached barn are a farmhouse and barn dating from the mid-18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings around the windows. It has a tile roof with ashlar and brick end stacks. The building is two storeys high plus an attic, with a four-window front. The layout is based on three units. The ground and first floors each have four 18th-century wooden cross casement windows, with most having 16 panes, although two retain original leaded glass. All windows have stone flat arches. There are two flat-topped 20th-century dormers. A 20th-century single-storey-and-attic range is attached to the left. A 20th-century porch provides access to the rear. The rear of the farmhouse also has two further wooden cross casement windows on the first floor. Connected to the left is a large, late 18th-century barn built of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and coped gables. The barn has a slate roof and a brick dentilled eaves cornice. The original large entrance has been blocked with 20th-century brickwork. Inside the farmhouse, there is an 18th-century turned baluster staircase and two 18th-century cupboards with moulded rails. An open fireplace features a chamfered timber bressumer with jewel stops, along with chamfered and stopped spine beams and joists. A queen strut roof retains its original purlins. Some floors are original stone flags.
